What we really like about Oh! Fine Lingerie is that a visit to the west Buckhead shop is like a trip into the kinds of boudoirs you see in black-and-white films. And with its selection of gauzy, vintage negligees and robes, you probably won’t have a problem picturing yourself in just such a place. Elegant, racy and lacy lingerie from the likes of Simon Perele, Cosabella, On Gossamer and even some break-the-bank pieces from Cavalli line the walls. Kittenish bedroom slippers tucked beneath the displays help shoppers imagine their complete ensemble, and vintage jewelry rests next to the register, just in case you need a little bling for your bada-bing.

Surrounded by newly erected condos and just blocks from Georgia Tech, MAC’S BEER AND WINE has been inciting a big Mac attack, so to speak, among fans of booze and brew. As spacious, spotless and well-lit as the high rises sprouting around it, Mac’s offers an easily navigated selection of bottles ranging from small-batch bourbons, craft rums, tequilas and singular scotches to massively marketed luxury vodkas. Mac’s offers the kind of global booze selection the condo dwellers will need when they see their association fees.

Can two music stores survive on the same street in a small hipster enclave? In Little Five Points, the answer is a resounding yes. Eric Levin has carved out a nice niche market for his CRIMINAL RECORDS enterprise, offering an impressive selection of domestic and import CDs. Oh, sure, DVDs, magazines, comics and toys are available, but this is the place for CDs. It’s rapidly turning into a great venue to catch a wide variety of live music, too. Criminal hosts a ton of cool, stripped-down in-store performances for your listening pleasure. After the set, get the artists to sign — what else? — their brand new CDs.

When we first saw the blue and yellow building hovering on 17th Street, we almost thought we heard angels singing. For Atlanta’s broke, thrifty and style-conscious folks, IKEA has been a godsend of epic proportions. The simple bookcases are perfect for keeping our pint-sized apartments organized, the kitchen cabinet selection is just right for those looking to refurbish and reorganize on a tight budget, the mattresses are the ideal price for kids coming out of dorm life, and for those willing to splurge just a little, the leather couches are just what the doctor ordered for hip living rooms citywide. less...

Perfect for the beginner and novice shooter, and pretty good for experts, SHOWCASE PHOTO AND VIDEO SUPERSTORE has equipment and supplies for both digital and film photographers. Its selection of inks, instruction books, papers and printers push it well above the competition. Showcase’s selection is bolstered by its nostalgic (or is it purist?) persistence to keep real, old-fashioned darkroom chemicals in stock. The staff is surpassingly helpful, friendly even, and the accompanying Showcase School of Photography can help anyone take their skills to the next level.

Crate and Barrel has come a long way since 1962, from a unique mom-and-pop shop in Chicago to a 130-store mega-chain that embodies the word “home” for Generation Y. Because it offers products for every conceivable domestic scenario (churning ice cream, guzzling margaritas, washing the dog) and features a variety of styles (classic, mod, rustic), C&B is ideal for a single-registry wedding. On the first Thursday of each month from 7-10 p.m., local designers and artisans converge at Grant Park’s Young Blood Gallery for Kraftwork, a night dedicated to selling the products of local crafters. Indie kids, neighborhood enthusiasts and friends of the artists sip cheap wine and PBRs as they peruse the handmade wares and chat with the creative entrepreneurs. Screen-printed tees, fingerless gloves, fabric pins, deconstructed skirts and crochet hats are just a sample of what is available each month. For a time, Phipps Plaza was off our browsing radar. It wasn’t so much the divine designer offerings, it was that so little seemed to change. Was there ever a time when Versace and Gucci didn’t inhabit the Saks wing? But when we saw that the uber-hip, ultra-exclusive Barney’s CO-OP was coming to town, we took notice and reconsidered our opinion. Now we browse through the mall as though in a museum, reawakened to the beauty at Jeffrey, eagerly discovering the new world of Jimmy Choo, and dreamily running our fingers over the Chanel at a redesigned Saks. When the stores have sales, we’ve found that the prices are good enough to skip out on crowded Lenox altogether. less...

For its second full year under artistic director Jasson Minadakis, ACTOR’S EXPRESS lived up to its rep as Atlanta’s most vital theatrical venue. Bookended by the darkly comic Killer Joe (the season’s most delightfully disturbing play) and the more challenging examination of Southern character, Hazard County, Actor’s Express produced the plays most likely to start arguments — in a good way. When friends come to town, there are few things we enjoy more than taking them on a quick drive by BUDDY’S and saying, “That gas station has a great selection of wine.” We bring the skeptical in to peruse the shelves filled with bottles ranging from the aptly titled Cheap Red Wine, to the crowd-pleasing bottles of Luna di Luna’s blends, and a refrigerator of chilled whites practically begging to be picked up for a cookout on the fly.
