There are plenty of script readers on the tube who'd have you believe they're journalists. There also are a handful of people who, despite the preening mannerisms, do considerable labor on the public's behalf. This year, it's WSB-TV's DALE CARDWELL who deserves the laurels. Cardwell knows how to dig, evidenced by one of his major coups in the last year, exposing blemishes on the hide of the volatile DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones. Cardwell also is tireless in pursuing businesses who prey on consumers and politicians who put their own welfare above their constituents'. "www.wsbtv.com" less...

Co-anchor and fellow WSB longtimer Monica Kaufman gets high approval ratings from viewers for her cheery warmth. But we think JOHN PRUITT's cool professionalism was the godsend in a year that required steady reassurance and straightforward professionalism. Two other authoritative anchors - WAGA's Russ Spencer and WXIA's Brenda Wood - excelled, while some other supposedly professional journalists leaned on sappy patriotism for ratings. We give Pruitt the edge for his deep knowledge of the community and its issues, which shows. less...

Channel 5 WAGA-TV www.fox5atlanta.com While stations in smaller markets often construct anchors from brittle plastics and even plywood, this model uses revolutionary polymers to simulate facial muscles and create an almost human appearance. Head revolves easily to correct cameras. Hair and earlobes stay in place and please to the eye from all angles. Princeton degree offers credentials of high intelligence; expressions and vocal intonations correspond to the nature and meaning of stories. Look for the Russ Spencer 2001 to be replicated in various formats; after field testing, it may qualify for network deployment. less...

Channel 5 WAGA-TV 404-875-5555 www.fox5atlanta.com WAGA's newscasts differ from those of three other news stations in town in two significant respects: Because Rupert Murdoch's Fox Network still hasn't brought his wacko bias to an evening news show, channel 5's local broadcast is the only news for the station in the early evening; and Fox's entertainment lineup ends at 10 p.m., which gives channel 5 a full hour of news at night. More time and the mandate to do national news helps make Channel 5 the best news station in town. The format helps the station eschew (relatively speaking) the combination of blood and happy talk that, sadly, predominates in local news across the country. Two other factors come into play: 1) From anchor to sports to in-the-field reporters, WAGA has the deepest talent pool of any other station, and 2) Channel 5's I-team (see "Best Local TV Reporter) regularly breaks substantive stories. less...

Channel 5 WAGA-TV www.fox5atlanta.com Dale Russell was recognized this year with his profession's highest honor, the George Foster Peabody Award. That shouldn't surprise longtime Atlanta viewers. It's almost a cliche among local journalists that Russell, the star of WAGA's "I-team, is "that rare breed: a TV reporter who actually digs up substantive stories on his own (we like to think that's because he got his start in the alternative press - with the "Atlanta Gazette", a long-passed competitor of "Creative Loafing"). Russell's reports also are marked by a strict refusal to talk down to his viewers; he assumes his audience is intelligent enough to be spoken to as adults. He won the Peabody for his 1999 expose of U.S. Customs racial profiling at Hartsfield International Airport; those reports led to congressional hearings and reforms within the agency. But that report wasn't unusual. Week in and week out, Russell scoops the rest of the media on stories that make Georgia a more just and better place to live. less...

Channel 11 WXIA-TV www.11alive.com Brenda Wood's long tenure in Atlanta and the dispassionate intelligence she conveys from the anchor's desk separate her from colleagues at other stations. The city's airwaves actually are blessed with several good anchors: veteran John Pruitt at WSB-TV 2, the highly professional Russ Spencer (our prod at his made-for-TV looks, notwithstanding) at WAGA and WAGA's effervescent Amanda Davis come to mind. But Wood's consistently professional demeanor and, especially, the easy manner with which she occasionally ad libs smart questions and comments, conspire to give her an unmatched gravitas. She's certainly not just another pretty face; she's an authoritative anchorwoman who lets the viewer relax, knowing that a pro is firmly in control of the broadcast. less...

The ABC affiliate wins here because of the station's recent decision to simulcast in Spanish, a rightful nod to this growing population. Otherwise all the local news in Atlanta is much the same.
