It takes a lot of time and knowledge to assemble those phonebook-like wine lists, but what is just as difficult in its own way (and actually more useful for a lot of people) is a short, smart, affordable and accessible list that doesn’t rely too heavily on dumbed-down easy sellers. That’s why the list at ECCO is especially impressive, with wines helpfully organized into Old World and New World styles, and cool grapes and regions featured heavily. There’s an assertive Italian presence, but California, France, Germany and Spain are all nicely represented. Prices range from reasonable to special-occasion (or just rich-guy) opulence. less...

Chantelle Grilhot
We’re not sure if we will ever get over our infatuation with CHANTELLE GRILHOT, the 24-year-old sommelier at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead. She is beautiful, brilliant and just as happy to wax poetic about a strange Slavic bargain as she is about a $400 Bordeaux. Always courteous, and without amore...
Always courteous, and without a hint of the snobbery that her profession is known for, she makes it hard not to feel at home when graced by her presence. less...

At ONE MIDTOWN KITCHEN, $19 to $49 (depending on the price tier you select) buys you as much red, white, dessert or sparkling wine as you can quaff in one evening. With its ear-shattering, breathtakingly dramatic interior and affordably priced menu of scrumptious little bites, there's no wonder this hip eatery is one of the city's hottest spots. Jostle for a seat in a fashionable thirtysomething crowd whose salaries are just beginning to catch up to their lust for life, then sip and watch the show. In mere months, Sam Governale has turned the new MIDCITY CUISINE into a sophisticated drinking destination with his witty, thorough wine list. There's truly something for everyone - affordable Merlots and Chardonnays for the common imbiber, a substantial collection of half-bottles for the lone wine geek and eyebrow-raising, esoteric grapes for the curious and daring. The list is a good read if solely to pick out the wacky names of some of the bottles, including "Blue Tooth," "Wild Ferment" and "The Hussy." And in a truly inspired move, Governale has selected four incredibly food-friendly vintages to be served by the carafe or half-carafe (each under $30 and $16, respectively). Bottoms up! About 100 wines from Champagnes to Super Tuscans are available by the taste and glass, and well over a hundred more are available by the bottle. Settle in at the bar and choose from over 60 glasses of wine, ranging from a $6 Pinot Grigio to a $27 Napa Cabernet. Consult with the well-informed staff to experiment with varietals you may not have tried before, such as the Treana Viognier-Marsanne blend - an unexpectedly lush, buttery find on a recent visit.
