Pura Vida
Depends on which street corner you happen to be on, doesn't it? Few culinary crazes have overtaken our city as thoroughly. We don't expect them to be authentically connected to Spain anymore. Depends on which street corner you happen to be on, doesn't it? Few culinary crazes have overtaken our city as thoroughly. We don't expect them to be authentically connected to Spain anymore. They just need to be small plates served by people who trill their R's. Whatever. We're heading to PURA VIDA these days. This restaurant has turned into a festive celebration of Latin culture with events throughout the week, but the menu - heavily influenced by Puerto Rico - has gotten better every month. Rich duck layered with sweet plantains and hanger steak in chimichurri sauce are among our faves. The mofongo is an earthy joy. Don't ask. Just try it. "656 N. Tapas are everywhere now but the best in town emerged this summer when NOCHE converted its menu of Southwestern cuisine to small plates of authentic Spanish and Mexican dishes. The crowd is hellaciously loud in this small restaurant that does a heavy bar business, but it's all perfect for a cuisine traditionally served in crowded Spanish cafe bars. Two don't-miss dishes are the white anchovies and onion salad on toast and the sauteed spinach with dried cranberries and pine nuts. Ditto for the spare ribs. Portions are more generous than usual and nothing costs over $5. "1000 Virginia Ave., 404-815-9155. www.heretoserverestaurants.com" less...

Chef Nancy Delgado Mathews (gone of late) transformed the always good ECLIPSE DI LUNA into something extraordinary. The tapas are so far beyond any others in Atlanta - in terms of authenticity and creativity - that they set a standard. Besides dishes like simple serrano ham, you'll find a roasted lamb sandwich with mint aioli, an empanada stuffed with chorizo, coriander-encrusted scallops with roasted garlic and white-bean puree, and many vegetarian choices. Wonderful ambience and good music. (Mathews recently left due to family illnesses.) "764 Miami Circle. 404-846-0449. www.eclipsediluna.com." less...

Mambo Restaurante Cubano
1402 N. Highland Ave. 404-876-2626 We can't say why, but a good paella is virtually impossible to find in our city. Most are quicky versions. Andaluz Bar de Tapas

903 Peachtree St. 404-875-7013 http://www.andaluzbar.com Although we think Gladys Parada could expand her menu considerably to include some kinkier offerings, we love this nuevo tapas bar with its biomorphic red lamps, its bullring mural and its Wednesday-night flamenco performances. Unlike most tapas bars in this city, Andaluz takes its inspiration from the authentic tapas cuisine of southern Spain. You can have manchego cheese and serrano ham. We love the chorizos poached in wine and the grilled asparagus. less...
