Quinn Masonry Trio plays Elliott Street Jan. 11

Free bop trio livens up Castleberry Hill Art Stroll on a cold evening

POWER TRIO: Marquinn Mason (from left), Daniel Bailey, and Kenneth Murray

Happening on the second Friday of every month, the Castleberry Hill Art Stroll celebrates the downtown neighborhood's diverse array of galleries, ultimately converging on the Elliott Street Deli and Pub for some music and fellowship.

This Friday, January 11, saxophonist Marquinn Mason's post bop trio provides the jams. Mason has a nice thick tone reminiscent of Sonny Rolllins, while drummer and lap steel player Kenneth Murray, and bassist Daniel Bailey (Faun and a Pan Flute) function as an active, engaging rhythm section in the vein of Ed Blackwell and Charlie Haden. Mason and Murray have played together in larger groups such as Kebbi Williams' Wolfpack ATL, but this is a nice chance to see these musicians pared down to a trio, performing a completely improvised set.

Free. Fri., Jan. 11. 9 p.m. Elliott Street Pub, 51 Elliott Street SW, Atlanta. (404) 523-2174.

string(1844) "Founded by German producer Manfred Eicher, iconic record label ECM (Edition of Contemporary Music) is turning 50 this year. In celebration of this milestone, adventurous music festival Big Ears will present a nice chunk of the label’s current roster at the annual festival in March.

ECM came into international prominence with big names in jazz such as Jan Garbarek, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, and Jack DeJohnette, but alternately always maintained a steady stream of out-jazz releases as well. Big Ears alumni Anthony Braxton and Evan Parker respectively had important outings on the label, Braxton in Circle (with Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and Barry Altschul), and Parker with the Music Improvisation Company and his own Electro-Acoustic Ensemble.

In the late 1970s, Eicher forged a fruitful relationship with the Art Ensemble of Chicago that continues to this day. One of the label’s most recent releases is a whopping 21-disc retrospective of the group and its members’ work on ECM. While a few founding members have passed away (R.I.P. brothers Joseph Jarman, Lester Bowie, and Malachi Favors Maghostut), saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell along with “sun” percussionist Don Moye will present a special Big Ears edition of the legendary group on Sunday, March 24.

Other ECM recording artists to be featured at this year’s Big Ears festival include Evan Parker, Meredith Monk, Carla Bley, master drummer Jack DeJohnette, and many others. Israeli pianist Shai Maestro’s trio is particularly impressive for a newcomer on the scene.
While Big Ears has long been a friend to the world’s jazz community, the 2019 festival may offer the healthiest bouquet of jazz acts to date.

Big Ears takes place at various venues in Knoxville, Tenn. March 21-24, 2019. Detailed concert schedules to be released Thursday, February 7."

string(2062) "The Big Ears Music Festival, Knoxville, Tennessee’s annual genre-melding music festival celebrates 10 years of fearlessly creative musical expression March 21-24. Today, the festival has revealed its full lineup for its 2019.

Some standouts from today’s additions include neo-bluegrass quintet and NPR darlings Punch Brothers, Animal Collective co-founder Avey Tare, and soundtrack composer (Storyville, That Awkward Moment) and experimental guitarist David Torn. Fans of exotic percussion will love the spooky tribalism of Yunohana Variations, featuring Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (of Lichens), Susie Ibarra, who has played drums with David S. Ware and William Parker, and YoshimiO from Japanoise provocateurs Boredoms.

This is all in addition to an already impressive lineup boasting performances by Art Ensemble of Chicago, Meredith Monk, Wadada Leo Smith, Vijay Iyer, Mary Halvorson, Bill Frisell, Harold Budd, Alvin Lucier, and Atlanta-based artist and songwriter, Lonnie Holley, supporting his latest album, MITH (Jagjaguwar).

Over the last decade, Big Ears has increasingly blurred the boundaries between acoustic and electronic music, and the 2019 lineup is a bold effort to bridge those perceived gaps. Alien Flower Sutra, an electroacoustic collaboration between Rob Mazurek of Chicago Underground Duo and Rob Emmett Kelly of Cairo Gang, and the oft-hailed "beat scientist" Makaya McCraven present electronic soul, with elements of jazz, folk, hip-hop, funk, and world music bleeding into their respective offerings. Both acts pair well with previously announced, difficult-to-classify acts such as the apocalyptic space funk of the Comet is Coming, Trance Maps+, featuring British saxophonist Evan Parker, Yves Tumor, Jlin, and the jazzy, electronic ambiance of pianist Nils Frahm. It is truly Big Ear’s most adventurous lineup to date.

Big Ears takes place in Knoxville, Tenn. at various venues from March 21-24, 2019. Tickets on sale now. Check out www.bigearsfestival.org for more details regarding schedule, ticket prices, and more."

Check out www.bigearsfestival.org for more details regarding schedule, ticket prices, and more. Their live shows are known to be expressive vehicles for old-time groovin' and positive juju. Hometown Afro-funk provocateurs the Lightning Orchestra and Kebbi Williams' Wolfpack round out this thunderous bill.

string(1330) "Before the glow from this year's spectacular music festival has even worn off, Big Ears has announced a preliminary lineup for its 2019 gathering of creative artists in Knoxville, Tenn. Founded by Ashley Capps of AC Entertainment, Big Ears offers an eclectic, adventurous musical experience, running the gamut of sound from free jazz to folk to avant-garde rock to electronic. The spirit of raw expression, of improvised collaboration is relished here. Lovers of all musical genres can rest assured they are in good hands in regard to the curation.

Next year, the festival will feature performances by German atmospheric pianist/electronic composer Nils Frahm, as well as South African guitarist Derek Gripper, Mary Halvorson's Code Girl, and the Messthetics, featuring experimental guitarist Anthony Pirog and the rhythm section of Fugazi. Atlanta sculptor/ multi-instrumentalist Lonnie Holley will also make a long-awaited return appearance. And finally, KY-based pianist and composer Rachel Grimes will present her "folk opera" The Way Forth. Let's hope she brings along the rest of her cohorts from the brilliant Rachel's ensemble.

Stay tuned for more announcements in the upcoming months.

Big Ears takes place at various venues in Knoxville, Tenn. from March 21-24, 2019. Tickets are now on sale online."
