Super Bowl LIII Recycling Rally
From the venue:
Zoo Atlanta has teamed up with the National Football League, Verizon and the Atlanta Super Bowl Host Committee for a Super Bowl project that helps to protect animal habitats and preserve the natural environment! Bring your E-Waste to the Super Bowl LIII Recycling Rally, sponsored by Verizon, and help with the “greening of Super Bowl LIII” and the preservation of animal habitats threatened by the mining of minerals used in electronics.
The Recycling Rally is open to the public and free of charge. Local residents may drop off all types of electronic waste to be recycled responsibly and kept out of local landfills. As a thank you, the first 250 families bringing in items will receive a gift bag, and all who drop off items will receive a discount on Zoo admission! The Recycling Rally takes place outside the Zoo entrance; admission to the Zoo is not required to participate. Simply drive up and volunteers will be ready to help unload!
Why it’s important
A critical component of cell phones and other small electronics is a substance called coltan. One of the few places in the world where coltan is found is the forests of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo—right in the middle of gorilla habitat. As a result of mining for coltan, critical habitat has been destroyed and gorillas have been displaced or even killed by poachers.
