Germany’s influence was crucial in the evolution of Baroque music. As the Italian influences spread north to Germany, German composers often moved to Italy to study and compose. Germans were not without their own influence, though, as their strict musical forms helped bring about iconic baroque forms such as the dance suite and the church cantata. From Buxtehude to Bach, the Germans brought together the musical world in a way defined a style period—and in a way that defined present-day music theory.
